Pico, if Jamal is more concerned about what his friends will think than getting himself ahead then he continues the cycle.

Those who have nothing want others to have nothing as well. More often than not it isn't "The Man" keeping the Jamal's of the world down it's their peer's and their environment. I caoched for 20 years and in that time I had many kids from the hood who had amazing talent. They easily could have been D1 recruits but that didn't happen. The streets claimed them. Their environment claimed them. The pressure of peer's to sell dope and the quick cash that came from it claimed them.

BGS, I wasn't happy the way I performed my first 18 but it was the first time ever playing elivations like that on a course I had never played. The rest of the time I played well especially in individual matches. I went 2-0-1 in my individual matches, second best on the team. It was a team even though and the Florida team lost to the Mississippi team so it sucked.

I did get to witness something I don't see in my circle of friends though. Kyle Morris an ex-Gator quarterback from back in the 80's was our host. His family owns the largest egg production source in the country, so he's ridiculously loaded. He's also a degenerate gambler and was betting $25k a spin at Roulette. He took both teams to dinner Saturday night, 26 guys in all between the two teams and the dinner bill was just under 6 grand. He gave my budddy $2000 and told him to go over to the craps table and don't come back till he's turned it into $10,000. I don't know if my buddy pocketed some of the $1000 but I do know he didn't turn it into any profit.

What if we just stopped all the goverment handouts? Without anything to look forward to on the first of the month, I bet more people would go back to school and fewer chicks would be getting pregnant because they'd all be too busy trying to scrounge up some money on their own. The key to solving poverty is to stop subsidizing it.

And then you remove the safety net for people who actually need some help once in a while. If the welfare system is making people want to get pregnant or not want to work and be subsidized by everyone else then it's the welfare system that needs changing, not the actual concept of a welfare system.

Maybe it's because poverty is the only thing they've ever known and they aren't deluged with visions of multi-gazillionaire celebrities on tv? Or maybe they're just inherently more happy and determined to make the best of whatever comes their way?

Or maybe they are just really nice people and despite all the hardships they go through on a daily/weekly/eternal basis, they think nothing about helping out some person from another country in a big ol' SUV even though they aren't going to get any payback from their actions.

Cute story, thanks.

wow, sounds like great golf times!!!!

It can be done without goverment assistance. I grew up poor. A single mother and three kids. My mom worked everyday and provided what she could and that's all there was. Growing up like that for some would make them appreciate the value of a dollar for some and for others like myself when we start making our own money we go crazy with things we never had.

Yeah it could be but I was referring more to the whole mentality of the people I got to know while there. Wally was talking about the cycle of poverty and while I'd feel safe saying the poverty they experience would put that of many poor Americans to shame, their outlook seemed to be different somehow. I don't know - I'm obviously not an expert on any of this stuff but I'm definitely grateful I experienced what I did. There's more than one way to negotiate living in poverty and I'm ashamed to admit that I don't think I'd given that concept too much thought before then.

Sure, anything can happen in an isolated case, but you're talking about large communities here. And eliminating the tiny amount of resources those communities have is not a way to uplift them.

Fischy, why bring up that Micky Mouse wannabe philosopher?

I'm not removing any safety net, I'm simply saying that people need to look to their neighbors and local community for a helping hand and not an amorphous government entity. The problem with the government being responsible for the aid is that they can never police the system adequately because they don't "know" these people beforehand. The only time you can dispense anything more than faceless charity is when you know the people you're helping.

Reno, there are exceptions to the rule but there also needs to be a change in the woe-is-me mentallity.

There is a large population among us that want for nothing more than to have someone else take care of them. These are not just minorities either, their are massive amounts of white people that are just sitting there taking and not producing.
